Self-management under Support at Home, requires providers to oversee even the contracted services clients arrange for themselves – known as “self- managed services”.
Who can self-manage?
Support at Home encourages clients to self manage all or some of their services under the Wellness and Reablement philosophy written into the new Aged Care Act.
It fits alongside the mantra of doing things “with” the client rather than “for” them.
Why would someone want to self-manage their services?
Self-management lets clients choose their own support staff and contractors, including when they undertake the service and exactly what they do.
Some clients prefer to have this level of agency in their own care.
Clients can choose to organise some or all of their services but, conversely, it comes at a cost……
Why does self-managing services cost the client more?
Even though the client is choosing and arranging certain contracted services, providers still need to ensure the services are approved – and check staff who will deliver the services.
Providers are ultimately responsible for all care and services delivered to clients, even if the client is in charge!!
To compensate providers for undertaking all the checks required on these contractors a loading of up to 10% can be applied to each self-managed contractor invoice.
You will need to keep track of –
- Which of their services the client wants to self- manage
- The checks you have undertaken on their chosen contractor
- Adding no more than 10% to these invoices but…. not paying the contractor the 10%!!
- Including the 10% surcharge in the calculation of client contributions
- The client’s agreement to these steps
